Q..Why do we need an onshore wind farm?
A..The UK government has recognised the importance that wind farms will play in achieving reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to global warming. The EU has commitments to source 20% of energy consumption from renewable sources and as part of this the UK must meet a 15% target. The UK also has a domestic target of reducing carbon emissions by 60% in 2050. Wind energy will play an important role in this although it is not the total solution; it is equally important that other technologies are pursued such as tidal, solar and biomass.

Q..What permission is required?
A..Enertrag will be seeking planning permission from the local authority under normal council planning rules.

Q..What do the plans involve?
A..Enertrag UK look to develop sites with sufficient land to accommodate 6 to 8 wind turbines at each location. Although each turbine takes up very little land, a distance of 5-7 blade diameters is needed between each turbine to avoid losses due to wind turbulence, so a wind farm may cover an area of 150 to 200 acres. The wind farm will connect to the national grid by buried cables, there will be no overhead power lines. The wind farms also require access tracks, crane hardstandings and a switch house. Planning permission is sought for a 25 year period after which time the site will be decommissioned.

Q..Will this impact the environment?
A..Enertrag UK request a scoping opinion from the Local Planning Authority prior to beginning an Environmental Impact Assessment. Following this response, Enertrag UK will employ specialist consultants to assess the effects of the development. Key areas of study will be ecology, ornithology, noise, visual effect and transport during the construction phase. The results of this study will be collated in an Environmental Statement, available to view once a planning application has been submitted.

Q..Will my views be taken into account?
A..Yes, feedback received during the public consultation will be incorporated into the environmental assessment. This will be publicly available once completed. If you wish to comment on a particular development please use the ‘send us your comments’ link at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you can contact us using the telephone number or email address at the top of the page.

Q..Who is Enertrag UK?
A..Enertrag UK is a British company set up in 2001 to develop and manage wind projects in the UK. The German parent companies have over 15 years experience in renewable energy projects with over 500 wind turbines and several biomass plants in their portfolio. For further information, please visit the ‘About Enertrag’ page.

Q..How do I find out more?
| A..Information on each project Enertrag UK are currently involved with can be found on the ‘Projects’ page. Links can be found on these pages to the information and consultation documents. A more extensive list of FAQs can be found within the consultation documents.
For each proposed wind farm, Enertrag UK hold public exhibitions where members of the public are invited to attend and members of the Enertrag UK team are on hand to answer queries. Details of these will be made available to local residents and will also be listed on this website.

Q..How are potential wind farm sites selected?
A..Enertrag UK initially review areas of land by using a large scale Ordnance Survey map to highlight areas of potential. This is done in conjunction with the Council’s land designation maps, air traffic control maps, and ecological information from stakeholders. Once a potential area is identified, on-site observations will take place to identify proximity to residential property. If you think you may have suitable land for development, please visit the 'Land Owners' page.
